Today, I had the chance to sit down with some of the talented individuals who make Hickory’s performing arts scene shine. From the rhythm of the dance floor to the heart of the school’s musical, these students are leaving their mark in their final year.
First, I spoke with Heaven Casarez, a senior and member of the Hickory Dance Troupe, which has been captivating audiences since its re-launch in 2022. Heaven’s passion for dance is evident as she explains, “It’s my escape from the world. I love giving my all and just being in the moment.” Reflecting on their recent performance at the homecoming game and pep rally, she said, “We did really well. Under pressure, we kept it together and gave it our best. It definitely paid off.” Heaven shared that, over the past year, her biggest growth has been in her mentality. “I used to be hard on myself for not being perfect. Now, I know it’s okay to not be flawless and just enjoy the process.” When it comes to pre-performance fuel, Heaven’s go-to is chicken—particularly from Chick-fil-A!
Next, I sat down with Emily Thomas, a senior who is ending her time at Hickory on a high note as the band’s conductor. Emily’s favorite band camp memory? “The first time tech told us to run a lap around the bus ramp, and everyone cried!” She laughed as she remembered that intense moment. Reflecting on the recent homecoming performance, Emily said, “It went really well, especially considering we were missing one of our drum majors.” Despite some setbacks with illness affecting a few band members, Emily is proud of how the performance turned out. As a conductor, Emily finds joy in the importance of her role, saying, “It feels great to have such a significant part in the band. It’s definitely something I’ll miss.” While she’s not planning on continuing with marching band in college, Emily is considering joining a wind ensemble.
Lastly, I spoke with Elizabeth Mauldin, a junior and the leading lady in the upcoming musical Alice by Heart. Elizabeth, or Izzie as she’s known, has worked her way from ensemble to understudy, and now, the coveted role of Alice. Her reaction to being cast? “I broke down in tears. There was no better feeling than realizing I would be playing opposite one of my best friends.” Izzie relates deeply to her character, saying, “Alice tries to find light in darkness. I try to do the same for myself and others.” Her favorite song from the show is “Afternoon,” a powerful piece that has moved her greatly, “It’s impacted my life in such a strong way that I can’t help but cry every time I sing it.” Izzie also took a moment to shout out her sister, Rachel, who has been her biggest supporter. “She’s given me the confidence to pursue big roles like Alice.” When asked why people should come see Alice by Heart, Izzie explained, “It’s an emotionally moving story with comical moments, and it explores the grieving process and what it truly means to love another person.”
It’s clear that Hickory’s arts programs are filled with passion and dedication, and these three students are prime examples of the talent thriving within the school. Whether on the dance floor, in the band, or on stage, their contributions are helping make this year unforgettable.
